Advanced TrimixThrough your extended range training you have developed the confidence to deal with extra, more cumbersome equipment and the psychological challenges presented by colder, deeper water and longer ascents requiring mandatory decompression stops.

You are prepared for the final step in the development of your OC training skills.

The IART Advanced Trimix course is the ultimate step. It takes you well beyond the skills and abilities of the majority of recreational divers but it demands a high level of understanding, practise and competence from those that undertake the training.

For good reason – beyond the Advanced Trimix level you are on your own!

Course content/duration:

During your IART Advanced Trimix training you will be given the opportunity to acquire the required abilities, knowledge and techniques to dive responsibly to dive responsibly with open circuit SCUBA in the realm of mixed-gas decompression dives using Trimix as bottom gas to a maximum depth of 90 msw and you will receive up-to-date education aligned with the currently accepted methods and guidelines with respect to:

  • Physiological aspects (E.g. CNS, nitrogen narcosis, hypercapnia, hypoxia and hyperoxia under extreme conditions)
  • Dive planning and execution
  • Deep diving physics and physiology ( E.g. HPNS, counter-diffusion and IEDCS)
  • Equipment considerations
  • Decompression planning and advanced decompression techniques
  • Gas management and gas switching
  • Oxygen as deco-gas
  • Emergency management
  • Decompression sickness

This objective will be achieved through both theoretical and practical training modules.

Topics covered in the practical training include the proper planning, gas analysis and cylinder labelling, equipment familiarization (travel/deco stage cylinders - removal/replacement), gas switching, emergency and out-of-air procedures (gas sharing, rescue ascent, etc.), ascent reel and lift bag deployment, and proper decompression techniques.

This course covers all aspects of Advanced Trimix theory and includes 2 confined water and 4 open water dives over 4 days, with a minimum accumulated in-water time of 240 mins.

        1. Course:
Advanced Trimis Diver (Level 3) diluent Trimix or Heliox

        2. Course Objective:
This course is designed to provide experience and training for open circuit mixed gas diving to a maximum depth of 90 msw. The OC III Diver course gives the opportunity to safely learn the techniques and theory for decompression dives with helium based mixes.

        3. Pre-requisites:
Minimum of 18 years of age, certification as IART OC Level II Extended Range (normoxic Trimix) Diver or equivalent plus a minimum of 20 dives following completion of Level II training (with not less than 20 dives deeper than 40m, 5 of which must be normoxic Trimix dives) and a valid diving medical

        4. Content/Course minimum:
All theoretical and practical aspects of Trimix or Heliox diving. The classroom sessions should explain the physical and physiological hazards of mixed gas diving, decompression planning, some equipment considerations for mixed gas diving such as diluent and bail-out selection, and all the procedures involved. An important point is dive planning using computer-based dive tables such as VPM, Z-Plan, ProPlanner, etc.
The practical part of the course includes 2 confined water and 4 open water dives over 4 days, with a minimum accumulated in-water time of 240 mins.
          The instructor-to-student ratio is 1:2.

        5. Support material:
IART OC Manual, NOAA 02-exposure table, mixed gas dive planning software, flash-cards, Instructor CD and Instructor presentation materials

        6. Required equipment:
Complete diving equipment, separate stage tanks, lift bag, safety reel, knife or tool, decompression table, slate, depth gauge and bottom timer or computer. The equipment should include an additional oxygen-clean regulator.

        7. Limits:
The maximum depth during training is 90 msw. At least 3 dives should be conducted at a minimum of 60 msw depth. Required ascent/deco time should not exceed 60 minutes

        8. Practical skills:
The dives should include the proper planning, gas analysis and cylinder labelling, equipment familiarization (travel/Deco mix stages - removal/replacement) emergency and out-of-air procedures (gas sharing, rescue ascent, etc.), ascent reel and lift bag deployment, and proper decompression techniques.

        9. Certification requirements:
The student must satisfactorily complete a written exam. Once training requirements are met the instructor must submit an application in order to obtain the corresponding IART certification card. In accordance with IART quality control, the student and Instructor are required to fill in the training protocol form. The instructor must retain this form with the student file.

        10. Certification:
          IART HQ

        11. Certification Renewal:
          not required
